# End of the road for Yew Sin-Ee Yi in men’s doubles
# Chon Wei sneaks into men’s singles semi-finals
Malaysia’s number two men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi will split their partnership without reaching the semi-finals of a Super Series event when they fell in the quarter-finals in the USD325,000 Daihatsu Yonex Japan Open in Tokyo on Friday.
The Malaysians, who will have new partners after the Japan Open, were beaten in straight sets by Japan’s Takuto Inoue-Yuki Kaneko 15-21, 18-21 in 36 minutes – failing to break their quarter-final jinx.
Their next tournament is the French Open in Paris from Oct 24-29 with new partners following the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) decision to break up the partnership of Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong following a spate of poor results this year.
Yew Sin’s new partner is Wee Kiong while Ee Yi will be paired with V Shem as the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) tries to grapple the continued slide in the men’s doubles – hoping to find the right combinations as Malaysia prepares for a busy next year.
Next year will see the Thomas Cup Finals in Bangkok, the Commonwealth Games (Gold Coast) and the Asian Games in Jakarta.
During their prime V Shem-Wee Kiong were ranked World No 1 and won the silver medal at the Rio Olympics apart from winning season ending BWF World Super Series Finals in Dubai.
Yew Sin-Ee Yi were hoping for an extended run and end their partnership on a high in the Japan Open after they dumped World No 8 Lee Jhe-huei-Lee Yang of Taiwan 21-18, 21-12 in the second round. However, the pair once again showed their inconsistency and failed to ride on their momentum.
Meanwhile, Lee Chong Wei, is the lone Malaysian standing in the tournament when he made the last four after a three game battle – this time against fourth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei before prevailing 21-11, 15-21, 21-19 in 63 minutes.
Chong Wei, seeded fifth, will meet China’s No 2 seed Shi Yuqi for a place in the final. The Chinese youngster ousted India’s H.S. Prannoy 21-16, 23-21.
World No 1 and top seed Son Won-ho sent former Chinese ace Lin Dan out of the tournament with a 2-15, 21-15 win over the seventh seed.BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
