A total of 479 events have been confirmed for the 9th ASEAN Para Games scheduled in Kuala Lumpur from 17 to 23 September.
The ASEAN Para Sports Federation (APSF) Board of Governors endorsed the number of events to be featured in the biennial Games where 16 sports will be contested.
The 2017 Kuala Lumpur Games will feature the most number of sports as compared to the previous editions of the ASEAN Para Games. In the last Games in Singapore, 15 sports were contested.
APSF Board of Governors convened its meeting on Thursday (27 July) in Kuala Lumpur. Also present were Malaysia Organising Committee (MASOC) Kuala Lumpur 2017 Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Seri Zolkples Embong, APSF President Maj Gen Osoth Bhavilai and Games Technical Chairman, John Ng and the region’s National Paralympic Committee (NPC) presidents.
Para Athletics will feature the most number of events, with 200 events to be held over five days of competition followed by Para Swimming (128 events), table tennis (27), chess (24), powerlifting (19), tenpin bowling (18), road cycling (14), track cycling (11), badminton (14), boccia (7), para archery (6), wheelchair tennis (4), wheelchair basketball (2), goalball (2), CP Football (1), Football 5-a-side (1) and sitting volleyball (1).
“The final number of events will only be finalised after the pre Delegation Registration Meeting (Pre-DRM) on Friday (28 July 2017),” said Dato Seri Zolkples after the meeting.
On venues for the Games, Dato’ Seri Zolkples said the current SEA Games 2017 venues will be used utilised for the Para Games.
“We foresee a smooth transition from SEA Games to the Para Games…on the technical side, we’ve appointed experienced Technical Delegates as well as capable International Technical Officials to ensure a smooth Games,” he said.
