HOME is definitely where the heart is for women’s doubles shuttlers Ng Hui Ern-Ng Hui Lin, who both yearn for the comfort of family and friends, especially on big celebrations such as Chinese New Year.
The independent shuttlers, who are attached to the Loughborough University in England, told Sports247.my that this is a sacrifice they must make for their education and badminton career.
“It’s tough because we’re missing out on all the good food and family fun back home. Here we’re committed to our training, and the only little celebration we had was a reunion dinner among the few friends we had on New Year’s Eve,” said the 24-year-old Hui Lin.
The sisters who are in London at their brothers place, added that they managed to surprise their parents last year, but not this time around.
“We couldn’t go back the first year, but last year we managed to surprise our parents. This year both our brothers are there, but not us,” Hui Lin lamented.
“My eldest brother (Ng Yau Chung) lives here in London, while my second brother (Ng Yau Chuan) is back in Kuala Lumpur.
“We all took turns to leave the family and study abroad, and it was hard to get off during celebrations, and it has been like this for a while now. So it’s something we’ve come to miss and accept along the way.
“But on the bright side, the two of us will be watching Taylor Swift live in London today,” exclaimed an excited Hui Lin.
The sisters left the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in 2010 to further their studies. They will be returning home for good in June.
The duo have expressed their desire to return to the national set-up, but that has been put on ice for now.
Hui Ern-Hui Lin are currently ranked world No.23 and they will be competing at the All England Open Superseries Premier from March 4-9.
