Striker Tomi JuricĀ hopes his goal which ultimately landed Western SydneyĀ Wanderers a historic AFC Champions League title can provideĀ a timely springboard for his international career withĀ Januaryā€™s AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 firmlyĀ on the horizon.

Juric again came on asĀ a second half substitute in Saturdayā€™s final second legĀ against Saudi Arabiaā€™s Al Hilal in Riyadh having missedĀ the start of the new A-League season as well asĀ Australiaā€™s recent friendlies with the United ArabĀ Emirates and Qatar due to a groin injury.

And despite beingĀ unable to repeat his feat from the previous weekā€™s firstĀ leg as the substitute slid home the goal which would ensureĀ Western Sydney became the first Australian side to land theĀ continental crown just after the hourĀ mark at Parramatta Stadium, Juric is well on the road toĀ completing his full return to action for both club andĀ hopefully country.

ā€œIt is a greatĀ way to get back on the pitch. You couldnā€™t ask for aĀ better way to come back from an injury, to score a goal toĀ win the title. I can definitely build on this,ā€ saidĀ 23-year-old former Adelaide United striker Juric,Ā who joined Western Sydney in May last year.

ā€œI was disappointedĀ to miss out on the Australia squad because you are alwaysĀ proud and privileged to represent your country and I couldnā€™t do that due to injury. But that is behind me nowĀ and I am looking forward to getting back onĀ the pitch in the A-League and performing week in and weekĀ out and working hard with the boys. Rewards come at the end,Ā but I think it is important for me to step up my game andĀ deliver week in week out now.

“The Asian Cup is aĀ realistic goal for myself. I was fortunate enough to go intoĀ the camps for the Belgium and Saudi Arabia games, and I knowĀ if I am consistent and I am playing week in week out andĀ playing good football and we are gettingĀ results, thatā€™s when the rewards will come.ā€

Having played hisĀ junior football for a number of clubs in both Sydney andĀ Western Sydney, Juric moved to Croatia at the age of 16 toĀ play for Croatia Sesvete before moving on to LokomotivĀ Zagreb and NK Inter Zapresic.

He eventually returnedĀ to Australia with Adelaide in 2013, and after completing hisĀ switch to Western Sydney, Juric made his Australia debutĀ against Korea Republic at the EAFF East Asian Cup beforeĀ opening his international account aĀ few days later in the same competition against Japan.

Juric was ruled out ofĀ Australiaā€™s meetings with the United Arab Emirates andĀ Qatar having suffered a groin injury prior to WesternĀ Sydneyā€™s AFC Champions League semi-final second legĀ success over Korea Republicā€™s FC Seoul at the startĀ of October.

But with AustraliaĀ coach Ange Postecoglou continuing to expand his pool ofĀ players ahead of the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015, Juricā€™sĀ goalscoring return to action for Western Sydney in the AFCĀ Champions League has arrived just in timeĀ ahead of the Socceroosā€™ high-profile friendly with AsianĀ champions Japan later this month.

ā€œI have got the goalĀ on my computer at home and even now I watch it on my phoneĀ again to relive that moment. I watched it a few times lastĀ night and I am really proud of myself,ā€ added Juric.

ā€œI had a tough fewĀ years prior to coming back to Australia and to know what IĀ have been through in those past years, and to come now andĀ lift this trophy, for me personally to score the goal meansĀ the world to me. I will definitely rememberĀ this one.ā€

But first, afterĀ Western Sydney depart Riyadh on Sunday, Tony Popovicā€™sĀ side return to A-League action with back-to-back away gamesĀ starting with a trip to New Zealand to face WellingtonĀ Phoenix on Friday.

And with the JapanĀ friendly scheduled to be Australiaā€™s last outing beforeĀ their AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 opener against Kuwait inĀ Melbourne on January 9, Juric will look to continue hisĀ recent goal scoring form after netting threeĀ goals in his last six appearances in the AFC ChampionsĀ League.

“We have got twoĀ tough games coming up and we have got a lot of traveling toĀ do again which doesnā€™t help us,ā€ said Juric.

ā€œBut we will get overĀ that hurdle and shift our minds across to the A-League asĀ those results are important now and thatā€™s what is goingĀ to keep us up there amongst the best.ā€

Western Sydneyā€™s AFCĀ Champions League success completed a remarkable fairy taleĀ run for a club only founded in April 2012, with theirĀ current A-League season representing only their third-everĀ domestic campaign.

Popovicā€™s side didĀ land the A-League Premiership in their debut season beforeĀ reaching back-to-back Grand Finals, which included a 2-1Ā extra-time defeat by Brisbane Roar in May.

“I donā€™t know howĀ to put into words how I am feeling. Unbelievable is the bestĀ way to put it. I am speechless is the only way I canĀ describe my feelings,ā€ added Juric, who was WesternĀ Sydneyā€™s highest scorer during the 2013/14 seasonĀ with nine goals in all competitions.

ā€œFor me personallyĀ and for us as a team, we set a goal for ourselves at theĀ start of the season and that was to take it a game at aĀ time, but we knew where we wanted to be at the end and thatĀ was holding this trophy up, and we believedĀ we could do it.

ā€œEven at times whenĀ people doubted us and said that we couldnā€™t do it as weĀ were up against a big challenge, we were able to defy theĀ odds under those circumstances because we believed inĀ ourselves and we went out to bring the trophyĀ home.ā€

CAPTIONĀ ā€“ Tomi JuricĀ scored the only goal in the AFC Champions League final asĀ Australiaā€™s Western Sydney Wanderers edged out SaudiĀ Arabiaā€™s Al Hilal 1-0 on aggregate.
