Reigning world champion Carolina Marin of Spain was too strong for Malaysia’s top ranked women’s singles
shuttler Tee Jing Yee when she showed the Malaysian the exit in the quarter-finals in the USD 350,000 Yonex Hong Open in Kowloon on Friday.
The Spaniard needed only 27 minutes to book her place in the semi-finals with a 21-8, 21-17 win after staving off some resistance from the Malaysian in the second set. Jing Yee reached her first ever quarter-final in a Super Series event with a sensational 21-19, 14-21, 21-15 win over China’s Wang Yihan, the second seed and world No 3, in the second round.
It was Carolina’s second win in a row over a Malaysian in Hong Kong. In the second round Carolina defeated Lydia Cheah with a 21-10, 21-10 win.
Newly crowned China Open champion Saina Nehwal of India was also bundled out. The third seeded Saina, ranked No 4 in the world, fell in straight sets to Taiwan’s Tai Tzu Ying and lost 15-21, 19-21 – putting an end to India’s challenge in the women’s singles after P.V. Sindhu was beaten in the second round by Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara.
In the men’s singles, the world champion champions Chen Long of China, who is also the top seed brushed of Japan’s Tukuma Ueda of Japan with an easy 21-16, 21-11 win in 52 minutes to book his place in the semi-finals.
