High performance coaching and athlete support forĀ Ghana womenās national team
The International HockeyĀ Federation (FIH) is pleased to announce the launch of theirĀ Hockey Targeted Assistance Programme (TAP) initiative withĀ the kick-off of its first project ā an exciting four yearĀ plan for hockey in West Africa.
Hockey TAP is part of the āEngage and EmpowerĀ Programmesā of the āHockey Revolutionā,Ā the FIH`s new 10 year strategy for hockey.Ā Hockey TAPĀ brings together funding and delivery partners from theĀ hockey family and beyond to maximise the impact, efficiencyĀ and sustainability of engagement projects.
At the end of 2014, representatives from FIH, UK Sport,Ā England Hockey and the African Hockey Federation (AHF) metĀ with the Ghana Hockey Association in the nationāsĀ capital Accra. During the visit, the group also met with aĀ number of different stakeholder groups including; officials,Ā athletes, coaches, teachers and young players: and developedĀ a four year assistance plan for hockey in West Africa whichĀ was put into operation in January 2015.Ā
The planĀ includes providing hockey equipment and resources in schoolsĀ and clubs across West Africa to recruit new players and theĀ training of over 70 new coaches to support the recruitment;Ā while at the other end of the spectrum ensuring the GhanaĀ womenās national team receives high performanceĀ coaching and athlete support at FIH events such as theĀ Hockey World League.
The partnership was formed following England HockeyāsĀ successful bid to host the 2018 FIH Womenās HockeyĀ World Cup at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park inĀ London.Ā As a legacy element of their bid, EnglandĀ Hockey secured a four year, international developmentĀ partnership with UK Sport.
Liz Nicholl, Chief Executive of UK SportĀ said: āThe UK is committed to playing itsĀ role as a strong and supportive member of the internationalĀ sporting community through wonderful initiatives like HockeyĀ TAP.Ā Providing this kind of international developmentĀ opportunity is now a key consideration for UK Sport whenĀ bidding for major sporting events and I am particularlyĀ pleased one of the key beneficiaries of this programme willĀ be womenās hockey in Ghana.ā
The Hockey TAP West Africa project will run through to 2018Ā but it has clear sustainability objectives that willĀ encourage a long term twinning programme between GhanaĀ Hockey and England Hockey.
England Hockey CEO Sally Munday said:Ā āThis is a fantastic opportunity for England Hockey toĀ use the knowledge, experience and passion of our staff,Ā volunteers, clubs and partners here in England to supportĀ the development of hockey within West Africa.ā
The breadth and depth of the objectives and initiatives ofĀ the project have enthused FIH President, LeandroĀ Negre who said: āHockey TAP West Africa is aĀ perfect example of the kind of partnerships hockey needs ifĀ we are to achieve our ambition ā to raise the globalĀ status and popularity of hockey. The vision andĀ professionalism of England Hockey and the generosity andĀ belief of UK Sport has enabled a project that will have aĀ significant impact on the expansion of hockey in WestĀ Africa.ā
