Indian starĀ Anirban Lahiri has received a sponsorā€™s invitation toĀ compete in the Shell Houston Open which is a boost to hisĀ Masters Tournament preparation next month.

The current Asian Tour number one,Ā who sensationally claimed two tournament victories duringĀ three-week span in Malaysia and India in February, hopes toĀ make full use of the opportunity to tee up at the GolfĀ Club of Houston in Texas from April 2 to 5.

Organisers traditionally set upĀ the course in Houston to resemble conditions at AugustaĀ National Golf Club, home of the Masters Tournament, andĀ Lahiri intends to grasp as much as he can in Houston beforeĀ headingĀ to the yearā€™s opening Major in the followingĀ week.

ā€œThanks to Shell, Iā€™m feelingĀ really happy that I will get a week to acclimatise andĀ prepare for Augusta National,ā€ said the world numberĀ 34.

ā€œI understand that itā€™s aĀ great golf course and a similar set-up in Houston. It willĀ be a great opportunity to learn.ā€

Lahiri will become only the thirdĀ Indian golfer to feature in the Masters Tournament,Ā following in the footsteps of Jeev Milkha Singh and ArjunĀ Atwal.

Singh, a double Asian Tour numberĀ one, played at Augusta National on three occasions, with aĀ best result of tied 25th achieved in 2008. Atwal,Ā the first Indian to win on the PGA Tour, also playedĀ in the Masters in 2011 but missed the halfwayĀ cut.

Lahiri said Singh, Atwal and JyotiĀ Randhawa, the first Indian to win the Asian Tour Order ofĀ Merit in 2002, must be credited for inspiring the newĀ generation of golfers, like himself, to emerge from theĀ sub-continent.

And he now hopes that his recent success will spur otherĀ young golfers back home.

ā€œThey have always been inspirational to us,ā€ said Lahiri, referring to Indiaā€™sĀ ā€˜Big Threeā€™.

ā€œI would never put myself aheadĀ of them. But you know, to put it in the words that Arjun putĀ it to me five months back, he said, ā€˜you know, we haveĀ done all these things that everyone looks up to. You haveĀ the opportunity to do that at 27, 28.Ā  We did it atĀ 35, 36. So you’ve got that much more time toĀ out-do us and out-doĀ yourself.ā€™

“And I think that is probablyĀ the one thing that I have to take to heart, and I have toĀ believe that, because I have that time. I’m getting theĀ exposure, I’m getting the opportunities at a much Ā younger ageĀ than they did and for me that is the greatest gift,Ā time.Ā  That’s something that they didn’t haveĀ as much of as maybe I do.

ā€œSo how I utilize that, how IĀ capitalize on that opportunity, is critical for meĀ personally in my career but also for someone to have thatĀ would beĀ is great for golf in India, asĀ well.Ā  If I can make use of that and if I really put myĀ head down and focus and concentrate on what I really need toĀ do, whichĀ is to just play golf and keep improving, I think that willĀ have that ripple effect on the growth and setting the barĀ higher.Ā  If I can continue to go in the same directionĀ and keep doing what I’ve been doing and improve, I thinkĀ that will happen.ā€
