Japan’s rising star Kento Momota won over the supporters at the Istora Senayan Stadium in Jakarta as he scored a stunning come-from-behind 16-21, 21-19, 21-7 win over defending champion Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark in the men’s singles final in the USD800,000 BCA Indonesia Open Superseries Premier on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Momota pocketed USD60,000 which came with the title . The match lasted 66 minutes. It was his second superseries, having won the Singapore Open earlier this year. The Dane settled
Describing his win as “extra ordinary” the Japanese youngster was left in a daze with his success, especially when the packed stadium switched their support to Momota after throw their weight behind Jorgensen who was hotly favourite to defend his title after China’s Chen Long, the top seed and world No 1, was knocked out in the quarter-finals by India’s Parupalli Kashyap.
Hailed as the next big name to emerge from Japan, Momota is a former Asian and world junior champion and is his country’s number one player at the moment.
There was another world junior champion who hogged the limelight in Jakarta on Sunday – Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon who is currently ranked No 6 in the world, went one up this year by winning the women’s singles title with a straight set 21-11, 21-10 win over unseeded Yui Hashimoto of Japan in 42 minutes.
Ratchanok, the world champion at senior level in 2010, was runners-up in Jakarat last year when she lost to China’s Li Xuerui in the final. But on Sunday, Ratchanok not only laid her hands on the title but also went home USD60,000 richer.
The unseeded Korean pair of Ko Sung-hyun-Shin Baek-choel continued their rich form in Jakarta Indonesia by winning the men’s doubles title – their first superseries title as a pair – with a 21-16, 16-21, 21-19 win over China’s Fu Hai Feng-Zhang Nan in a 53 minute battle. Their reward was USD63,200 while the losers got USD30,400.
Sung-hyun and Baek-shoel defeated compatriots and world No 1 Lee Yong-dae-Yoo Yeon-seong in the semi-finals.
For Zhang Nan it was a double blow after he and Zhao Yunlei, the Olympic champions, were beaten 21-17, 21-16 by compatriots Xu Chen-Ma Jin in the mixed doubles final.
