Super League champions Johor Darul Takzim gave a dominant performance at the Larkin Stadium in Johor Bahru to kickstart their Malaysia Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Perak in a Group B match on Friday.
Safee Sali – getting a rare first team start – opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he dived low to put S. Chanturu’s cross from the right past a rooted Azizon Abdul Kadir between the posts.
And Chanturu settled the issue four minutes later – also with a header – when he jumped high to finish off a cross from Mahali Jasuli on the left.
That was all the Southern Tigers needed on a night when their Argentine hot shot Luciano Figueroa had a subdued game against Perak who are now helmed by Croatian Vjeran Simunic.
To round up a miserable night for Perak the visitors were reduced to 10 players when referee Syed Azhar Kamar sacked defender Hisyamudin Shaari in the 88th minute for a second bookable offence.Â
Still, Simunic was a happy man despite the defeat and said: “It is a great result for us to lose 2-0. With a little bit of luck we could have earned a draw but it did happen.
“This is only the beginning and hopefully we will be able to achieve positive results in the coming matches.”
JDT next fly off to Hong Kong for their second-leg AFC Cup quarter-final match against South China at the Mongkok Stadium on Tuesday. The first-leg in Larkin ended in a 1-1 draw.
