Less than a month after beating Chou Tien Chen to win the French Open title Malaysia’s Olympic hope Datuk Lee Chong Wei will cross path with the Taiwanese in the second round in the USD700,000 Thaihot China Open Superseries Premier on Thursday.
The former World No 1 cleared his first round match against Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long with a 21-10, 21-13 win in 36 minutes at the Haixia Olympic Sports Center in Fuzhou City.
The unseeded Malaysian will face Tien Chen for a place in the quarter-finals. The Taiwanese was stretched to the limits before prevailing 12-21, 21-15, 21-17 in 57 minutes.
In the French Open, Chong Wei who has inched his way to No 9 in the world from a low 180 when he was banned for alleged doping, goes into the match with a 1-0 advantage in the head to head count. He beat Tien Chen 21-13, 21-18 in the French Open in his only previous meet with the Taiwanese.
In the women’s singles Malaysia’s top shuttler Tee Jing Yi faces India’s No 1 seed and defending champion Saina Nehwal for a place in the quarter-final after clearing the first round with a 21-17, 22-20 win over Taiwan’s Chen Hsiao-huan. The match lasted 36 minutes.
Malaysia’s top doubles pair of Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong also advanced with a 21-16, 21-11 win over the scratch Dutch-Kiwi pair of Ruud Bosch-Oliver Leydon Davis in 24 minutes.
The Malaysians, however, have difficult task in the second round where they will face Denmark’s fourth seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen. The Danes knocked out Malaysia’s independent pair Hoon Thien How-Lim Khim Wah in three-sets 21-16, 18-21, 21-13 in a 69 minute battle.
However, another independent pair from Malaysia Koo Kien Kiat-Tan Boon Heong made the second round without lifting their racquet when they received a walkover from India’s Manu Attri-B. Sumeeth Reddy.
Kien Kiat-Boon Heong will face Japan’s Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Noriyasu Hirata who also had a free ride into the second round after receiving a walkover from third seeds Fu Haifeng-Zhang Nan of China.
SEA Games champions Amelia Alicia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho kept Malaysia’s hopes alive in the women’s doubles after breezing through Egypt’s Doha Hany-Hadia Hosny 21-7, 21-18 in only 17 minutes after Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei continued their slump after losing 14-21, 16-21 to Koreans Chae Yoo-jung-Kim So-yeong.
