# ‘We will take one match at a time’ – Wee Kiong

They mustered the court conditions fast and things were easier for Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong in their opening match in the Celcom-Axiata Malaysia Open at the Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam on Wednesday.
V Shem-Wee Kiong, breezed through, needing only 23 minutes in their 21-10, 21-16 win over Taiwan’s Chen Hung-ling-Wang Chi-lin as the home fans celebrated the win for a possible crunch tie against top seeds and favourites Lee Yong-dae-Yoo Yeon-seong of South Korea.
The crack Korean pair were playing Taiwan’s Lee-Sheng-mu-Tsai Chia-hsin in a late match on Wednesday.
“It is one match at a home for us. Our win in the first round is a morale and confidence booster,” said Wee Kiong after the match.
“This is the first time we played at this stadium and we found it windy. However, we were able to adjust our game faster than our opponents. We need to do the same in the next round.
V Shem hopes that they will be able to raise their game in the second match and it does not matter who they meet.
“It is a good start to our campaign and we do not want to end our stay earlier,” said V Shem, adding that reaching the semifinals in the recent India Open is “motivating” for the pair.
The Malaysian pair, who are virtually through to the Rio Olympics in August reached the semi-finals in the All-England and India Open this year but are still chasing their first Superseries title.
Meanwhile, Goh Soon Huat was bundled out of the men’s singles in the first round when he lost to veteran South Korean Son Wan-ho in after a three-set battle. The Korean prevailed 21-16, 5-21, 21-13 in 52 minutes.
“I am disappointed. I blame myself for the defeat as I was in a hurry to finish off in the rubber,” said a dejected Soon Huat who reached the semi-finals in the recent New Zealand Open Grand Prix Gold in Auckland.
This is the first time Soon Huat was playing Wan-ho in a tournament.
