Malaysia’s world junior champion, Goh Jin Wei survived the qualifying rounds today to make it through to the first round of the Badminton Asia Championships which began here today.
Jin Wei. 16, defeated Singaporean Chen Jiayuan 21-10, 21-6 in 22 minutes and went on to make it past Sri Lankan Lekha Shehani 21-11, 21-16 to earn her place in the main draw.
The young Malaysian will face Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in first round tomorrow. And should she clear the first hurdle, she is likely to meet topseed Li Xuerui.
Another Malaysian, Ho Yen Mei also made the main draw after scoring wins over Veronika Sorokina from Kazakhstan (21-9, 21-13) and Cheung Ying Mei from Hongkong (21-17, 21-12).
Meanwhile, top mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying made an early exit after going down to South Koreans Shin Baek Cheol-Chae Yoo Jung, 21-18, 18-21, 21-16.
Another mixed doubles pair, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing survived their first round battle with Japanese Kenta Kazuno-Ayane Kurihara. They won 21-14, 21-15 and will meet topseeds, Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei from China.
