Malaysia’s Datuk Lee Chong Wei won his sixth Indonesian Open men’s singles title but it was not an easy win for the Malaysian who was made to struggle all the way by Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen in the final.
However, the second seeded Chong Wei, used all his experience and cool to come back from a set down in his 17-21, 21-19, 21-17 win in 66 minutes – a win which will see the world No 2 wrest the No 1 spot from China’s Chen Long.
Chong Wei showed his coolness in the second set when Jorgensen led 19-17 but he upped his ante to reel off four points in a row to take the match into a decider and the rest is history. The Malaysian now leads the head-to-head count 16-1.
Chong Wei was quick to thank his Indonesian supporters for “making me feel at home” for the win. While acknowledging the fans Chong Wei kissed the Malaysian flag on his shirt.
“I’m very happy to win the Indonesia Open for the sixth time. Today Jorgensen played very well. I just try to focus and I was relaxed and in the beginning I didn’t play so well. In the second game he was leading 19-17, I was preparing myself to lose. I just wanted to try for each point,” said Chong Wei afterwards.
“Jorgensen played much played better compared to previous matches. I beat him in Malaysia, but he played a better game today. Now I will go to Australia and hope to continue my performance. I hope I can come next year to Indonesia and retain my form.”
Jorgensen and Chong Wei later exchanged their shirts.
Chong Wei garnered 11,000 points with his win in the USD900,000 BCA Indonesia Open Superseries Premier event held at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Sunday.
Chen Long’s current points standing is 92,194 to Chong Wei’s 88,953 total – a difference of 3,241 points.
Chong Wei’s win in Jakarta puts him among the legends like Taufik Hidayat and Ardy Wiranata who have won the title six times. The Malaysian had previously won the title in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.
The men’s doubles title went South Korea’s way with top seeds and world No 1 Lee Yong-dae-Yoo Yeon-seong winning 13-21, 21-13, 21-16 win over China’s fifth seeds Chai Biao-Hong Wei in 73 minute final.
The women’s doubles was also a three-set affair with Japan’s top seeds Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi coming out tops against China’s third seeds Tang Yuanting-Yu Yang 21-15, 8-21, 21-15 in 66 minutes.
China’s Xu Chen-Ma Jin retained the mixed doubles title. The fifth seeds upsets third seeds Ko Sung-hyun-Kim Ha-na 21-15, 16-21, 21-13 in 56 minutes.
