Second seed and world junior champion Goh Jin Wei fell by the wayside in her bid to win the Asian junior title when she was beaten in three-sets by South Korea’s Kim Ga-eun in the quarter-finals in Bangkok on Friday.
The 16-year-old Jin Wei had beaten the Korean at the same stage on her way to the bronze medal at last year’s Asian junior meet, battled in vain for 57 minutes in her 21-13, 17-21, 21-13 defeat at the BCP Badminton and Sports Science Training Center on a day of upsets.
Thailand’s top seed in the women’s singles Pornpawee Chochuwong also failed to make the semi-finals. The Thai retired with a right thigh injury against China’s Gao Fangjie with the Chinese leading 21-9, 7-1 after 20 minutes.
Indonesia’s fourth seed Gregoria Mariska advanced to the semi-finals with a 19-21, 24-22, 21-19 win over Japan’s fifth seed Natsuki Nidaira while third seed Chen Yufei of China won 21-9, 21-13 winner against Thailand’s Pattarasuda Chaiwan.
There was more disappointment for Thailand when their top seed in the men’s singles Kantaphon Wangcharoen was also knocked out by eighth seed Sun Feixiang of China who won 21-16, 21-18 in 47 minutes.
“I did not play well . My opponent played a better game than me. She deserves to win. I had beaten her in the quarter-finals in the same meet last year…I am disappointed with myself,” said Jin Wei after her defeat.
Malaysia’s interest in the Asian meet is only in the men’s doubles when Ooi Zi- Heng-Soh Wooi Yik marched into the last four. The Malaysians staged a remarkable recovery from a set down to beat Korea’s Lee Sang-min-Na Sung-seung 17-21, 21-14, 21-19.
