Malaysia’s world junior champion Goh Jin Wei achieved a personal milestone in her blossoming badminton career when she marched into the last eight in the USD120,000 Yonex Sunrise Indonesia Masters in Balikpapan on Thursday.
It is her first quarter-final in a Grand Prix Gold tournament and her 21-17, 21-10 win over Indonesia’s Desandha Vegarani Putri in a second round match in 37 minutes earned the Malaysian a quarter-final match against China’s Gao Fangjie.
The Chinese pulled off an upset when she stopped Singapore’s China-born fourth seed Liang Xiaoyu 11-21, 21-17, 21-15 in a 58 minute match.
In the first round the eighth seeded Jin Wei was given a tough fight by Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska in the first set before prevailing 25-23, 21-12.
Third seeds Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing kept Malaysia’s hopes alive in the mixed doubles when they fought back from a set down to beat Indonesia’s Wirawan Afiat Yuris-Nadya Melati 18-21, 22-20, 21-16 in a close encounter that lasted 67 minutes.
The Malaysians will play another Indonesian pair Nugroho Lukhi-Amelia Ririn in quarter-finals. The Indonesians won 22-24, 21-16, 21-19 in a 61 minute match against China’s Zhao Haodong-Hu Yuxiang.
There was pleasant surprise for Malaysia in the men’s doubles when qualifiers Chooi Kah Ming-Low Juan Shen reached the quarter-finals with a hard fought 21-15, 16-21, 21-13 win over Indonesia’s Yohanes Rendy Sugiarto-Afiat Yuris Wirawan in the second round.
However, the newly formed Malaysian pair have a tough hurdle against Indonesian fourth seeds Hardianto-Kenas Adi Haryanto for a place in the semifinals. Hardianto-Kenas outplayed Malaysian privateers Lim Khim Wah-Ong Jian Guo 21-13, 21-15 in their second round match.
