AKID ON COURSE FOR CP115 TITLE
Team PETRONAS Yamaha Maju Motor’s Mohd Akid Aziz has placed himself on course for the CP115 title. Akid clocked second fastest during the first day of timed practices during the final leg of the 2016 PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship underway at Taiping this weekend.
The CP115 rookie clocked second fastest with 1’01.874s. He lost the provisional pole to GiVi Honda Yuzy Racing’s Azroy Hakeem Anuar who bagged the honours with a last-second dash to the finish line with 1’01.833s.
“Azroy was really fast today but he is in no position to change the outcome of the title chase. He just wants the win and I don’t begrudge him the provisional pole. What concerns me is that my competitors have demonstrated that they can match my pace,” said Akid, refering to Motul Zeneos Yamaha YY Pang’s Tengku Amirul Haffiruddin who was third fastest with 1’02.089s and Mohd Haziq Mohd Fairues who posted fourth fastest with 1’02.390s.
However, Akid could be assured that he would only need a top-8 finish during the CP115 Final to bring home the trophy. Even if either Tengku Amirul or Haziq Fairues were to win the final race of the season, Akid would only need to pick up an additional seven points.
Meanwhile, 2016 CP130 Champion Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin continued to romp ahead of the pack when he clocked fastest with 1’00.078s followed by Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi with 1’00.816s and Mohd Fitri Ashraf Razali who posted 1’00.948s.
Local hero Ahmad Fazli Sham took a heavy tumble during the free practice session and was able to place only ninth fastest during the timed practice session.
In the Wira category, Saiful Azhary Muhamad (Idemitsu Kozi Yam Honda Racing) posted the fastest time of 1’03.841s followed by Md Helmi Azman (IUGB AFB Tech) and Md Amirul Arif Ramlee (PETRONAS Yamaha) who stopped the clock at 1’04.048s and 1’04.091s respectively.
The final race of the season will kick off from noon today (Sunday). Entry is free for spectators.
