Malaysia had a miserable day in the Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open Superseries on Friday with none of them getting into the semi-finals – including world No 1 men’s doubles pair of Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong.
The top seeds were shown the exit by a scratch Indonesian pair Mohammad Ahsan-Rian Agung Saputro – playing together in only their second tournament since coming together. The Indonesians won 21-11, 17-21, 21-17 in 48 minutes.
It was also the end for Malaysia’s No 2 men’s doubles paur Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi. However, there is no disgrace in their defeat to number four seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen. The Danes rode on their vast international experience with a hard fought 21-14, 18-21, 21-13 in a 55-minute encounter.
Also out of the USD350,000 Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open at the Coliseum Hong Kong is former Thomas Cupper Chong Wei Feng. The 29-year-old Kedahan failed to make the last four he fell to a 17-21, 21-23 defeat to India’s Sameer Verma in 47 minutes.
Yew Sin-Ee Yi have shown vast improvement in their game and they have plenty of fire in them as seen in their matches against fifth seeds Mads Conrad Petersen-Mads Pieler Kolding (21-19, 22-24, 21-18) in the first round followed by the second round win over Korea’s Kim Jae-hwan-Yoo Yeon-seong (11-21, 21-10, 21-18)
Meanwhile, third seed and last week’s China Open champion Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark reached the last four with a 21-19, 21-17 win over Hong Kong’s Vincent Wong Wng Ki and will face Verma for a place in the final.
The other semi-final is an-all Hong Kong affair between Angus Ng Ka Long who beat India’s Ajay Jayaram 21-15, 21-14 and compatriot Hu Yun who overcame Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro (22-20, 21-12).
In the women’s singles top seed and world No 1 Carolina Marin of Spain, Taiwan’s Tai Tzu Ying (4th seed), India’s P.V. Sindhu – winner of last week’s Thaihot China Open, and home favourite Cheung Ngan Yi will battle in the semi-finals.
