National waterskier Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah emerged as the women’s tricks and overall champion at the Malaysian Waterski and Wakeboard International in Putrajaya today.
The 14-year-old have successfully defended her 2015 Singapore SEA Games titles after the two-day pre SEA Games event (29-30 July) hosted at the Putrajaya Watersports Complex.
Despite winning a medal each in all three events – tricks (gold), jump (silver), slalom (bronze), Aaliyah is definitely not about to rest on her laurels as she aims to break her two SEA Games gold medal tally in 2015.
“Actually I’m not happy with the results as I felt it wasn’t my best and I had not perform as well as yesterday either.
“I need to be more consistent as I’ve been lopsided. If I did well yesterday then that means I should be able to do better.
“My results are quite close to the winners and with the guidance of our coach Larry Gisler, I believe I will be able to improve with the time remaining towards the Games,” said Aaliyah.
Aaliyah, however, admitted that the pressure from an overwhelming expectation to win had affected her concentration as well.
“I was not focused at all to do the same as I was kinda pressured by the expectations after winning all three events in the preliminary round yesterday.
“Everyone was expecting me to win again. My heart was pumping so fast and it kinda tightened me up. I was not relaxed as much as the first day so it did affect my concentration and performance.
“But I will do my best to work on it,” added Aaliyah. – BY ALVIN OH
