THE Malaysian BMX cycling squad had something to be proud off when they set a new mark in the event at SEA Games level.
As the BMX event at Kuala Lumpur 2017 SEA Games kicked off in Nilai Velodrome on Saturday (26 August), Noor Quraantaina Mamat sprang a surprised when she delivered a bronze medal in the women’s category.
The 22 years old athlete wrapped up the 336 meter race in thisrd place, collecting a total of 11 points.
As expected, Indonesia’s Elga Kharisma Novanda took the gold medal after collecting three points while Chutikan Kitwanitsathian of Thailand walked away with a silver after completing the race with six points.
The race was delayed for about an hour due to heavy down pour in Nilai.
Malaysia had yet to win any medal in the event at the SEA Games level and Noor Quraantaina achivement proved that local cyclist had the potential to shine.
“I didn’t expect to win medal because Thailand and Indonesia are powerhouse in the event.
“I only focus to finish the race and in the end, it paid off handsomely.
“This my first medal at SEA Games level. We never do well in the event at higher level like the SEA Games,” said Noor Quraantaina when met after the race.
In the men’s category, Malaysian riders failed to deliver which saw Indonesia’s Gusti Bagus Saputra took the gold medal.
Nonthakon Inkhoksong of Thailand and Caluag Daniel Patrict of The Philippines grabed silver and bronze.medal respectively.
