‘I will compete in selected big meets next year’ – Chong Wei
Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei has put his shock first round defeat in the recently concluded World Championships in Glasgow behind him and is looking forward for a better year next year.
The Malaysian ace is looking at next year’s Thomas Cup and the Commonwealth Games plus the Asian Games and even the World Championships which effectively drove home the message that Chong Wei is not about to quit the sport.
“I have met and discussed things Datuk Seri (Norza Zakaria, who is the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president,” said Chong Wei, adding that he will also have further discussions with his coach Datuk Misbun Sidek.
Chong Wei was at the Arena Axiata in Bukit Jalil for the Sea Games badminton finals on Tuesday – the last day of the badminton competition.
Chong Wei suffered a shock first round defeat at the hands of Frenchman Brice Leverdez in this year’s World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland on Sunday. It was his second defeat to Leverdez, having lost to him in the Denmark Open last year.
“I am not going to put any pressure on myself over the defeat. I am 34 and still top 10 in the world. There are several big tournaments next year like the Thomas Cup and the Commonwealth Games and the country needs me,” added Chong Wei. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
