The 15th OCM Tan Sri Alex Lee Charity Golf 2017 to be held on Nov 28 at the Saujana Golf & Country Club will continue to benefit more needy present and former national athletes to provide study grants to undertake tertiary education.
This fund through the Charity Golf event was the noble contribution of the family of late Alex Lee and was set up in 1999 in memory of the former.
Alex Lee was a lawyer, banker, deputy minister, and athlete and sports leader. His untimely demise in 1999 robbed Malaysian sports of an outstanding sports leader and an exceptional human being.
The fund was initiated in 1999 by Datuk Thomas Lee, the brother of Alex Lee. Thomas is the chairman of the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes Education Fund Committee.
Thomas Lee, works very hard to make this annual charity golf tournament a success every year and raise substantial funds to keep the fund a sizeable amount.
Saujana Golf & Country Club came on board, to organise the annual charity golf tournament to raise funds for the Education Fund and provide the golf course at no charge to OCM, all technical support, source sponsors and assistance in the organisation of the charity golf tournament.
“This fund is assist athletes to pursue their education and while we have good support from corporate organisations, the support from NSAs themselves can be better. After all, it is for their athletes,” said Thomas.
To date through generous donations of friends and well-wishers, the Commonwealth Games Federation and the OCM, the Fund stands at RM 1,241,043.00.
Forty-seven (47) athletes have benefited from the fund so far where each athlete got a scholarship of RM3,000. The sum has been increased to RM5,000 per athlete from last year.
Some of the more notable recipients of the Fund include track cyclist M. Kumaresan, who competed in the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics; G. Saravanan, the 1998 Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 50km walk; and five-time SEA Games high jump champion Loo Kum Zee.
When the Education Fund was first set up the response overwhelming and within the first five months, RM251,050, was raised.
By 2002, the fund through awarding scholarships to deserving national athletes depleted to around RM200,000 with no visible means of sustainable inflow of funds.
The 1st Tan Sri Alex Lee Charity Golf tournament was organised on 23rd June 2003 raising a sum of RM25,000.
The charity golf tournament was organised by Saujana Golf & Country Club as one of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Saujana Golf & Country Club were awarded the 2011 IOC Trophy for Sport and Social Responsibility.
Alex Lee at the time of passing away in a scuba-diving accident off the coast of Papua New Guinea, was vice-president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, vice-chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation and president of the Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia, besides also being involved in hockey and volleyball.
He had played a major role in bringing the Commonwealth Games to Malaysia in 1998 and getting squash into the Commonwealth, Asian and SEA Games programme. He was himself a great all-round athlete, excelling in golf and squash and participating in many other sports including skiing and scuba-diving.
The Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund is indeed an appropriate and fitting recognition of Alex Lee’s contribution to society at large and sports in particular.
The Olympic Council of Malaysia invites all friends of the late Alex Lee and sports, corporations and well-wishers to participate in this charity golf and generously contribute towards the Fund.
