# New tournament ‘Challenge Cup for teams that don’t qualify for the Malaysia CupFootball fans will be in for a treat next season as the prestigious Malaysia Cup returns to its old format – standing on its own – instead of being played at the same time as the league competitions.
The country’s oldest football tournament lost its shine somewhat the last two seasons and the return to the old format is set to bring back the shine as it is one tournament that brings out the best from teams.
Selangor hold the proud record of having won the Malaysia Cup a record 33 times while Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) won it this season – defeating defending champions Kedah 2-0 in the final on Nov 4 – for a grand double having earlier won the Super League for the fourth successive year.
Football Malaysia Limited Liability chief executive officer Kevin Ramalingam also announced the “birth” of a new tournament – the “Challenge Cup” for teams that do not qualify for the Malaysia Cup.
According to Ramalingam the Challenge Cup will give the teams more matches instead of just playing 22 matches in league.
“We are fine tuning the details of the new tournament which will be announced soon,” said Ramalingam. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAHI
