Despite cruising to an easy win her match against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Linh in the women’s singles of the E-Plus Badminton Asia Team Championships this afternoon, Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei still feels that she has plenty to give in her next game.
Jin Wei crushed Thuy Linh in straight sets of 21-11, 21-15 in just under half hour to give Malaysia the valuable point and a 4-1 victory over Vietnam in their opening game in Group Y.
“I feel that I still have not played my best yet where I still need to adapt to the court. But I will play better in the next game,” said the 18-year-old Jin Wei.
“But it was not a workout today as it was a tough match in spite of the comfortable score line. I had to work for every point.”
Malaysia raced to a 3-0 lead through Soniia Cheah, Goh Jin Wei and Selvaduray Kisona in the singles events before they stuttered somewhat in the women’s doubles following the withdrawal of Woon Khe Wei.
Khe Wei – one half of her partnership with Vivian Hoo – limped off with an injured knee just 11 minutes into their game here at the Sultan Abdul Halim Indoor Stadium.
But while Malaysia dropped a point, they recovered to win the fifth game to win 4-1.
“We’re still unsure how serious the injury is. We chose to retire early as we didn’t want to make matters worse. We’ll just have to wait for the doctor’s report and see how it goes.
“It was disappointing but sometimes you can’t avoid injuries from happening. Hopefully the injury is not too serious,” said Vivian. – BY ALVIN OH
