Family is what matters most – but it can be tricky when beach volleyball’s involved
Where would you be without family? For the beach volleyball elite on the Beach Volleyball Major Series, it’s not an easy question to answer.
From starting a family, having a baby or falling in love on the tour, family life is never dull for some of the world’s greatest players, who revealed what it’s like just to juggle your career and personal life.
Just ask Fort Lauderdale Major champion Nick Lucena. He missed the birth of his second child, Cole – attempting to rush back in time from, guess what? A beach volleyball tournament.
“It’s the hardest thing being away from your family. When I missed Cole’s birth, I felt terrible,” Nick says. “The hardest thing is leaving them. When we’re away on tour we’re basically having a FaceTime relationship. It’s usually a daily call. It’s part of the routine. It’s not ideal and I don’t want to miss too much of them growing up.”
