Seventh seeds Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying could not find that little extra in their game and had to settle as second best in the mixed doubles final in the Crown Group Australian Open on Sunday.
In the final played at the Quay Centre Olympic Park in Sydney, the Malaysians fell to the scratch Korean pair of Seo-Seung-jae-Chae Yu-jung 12-21, 21-23 in 46 minutes.
Still, it is a remarkable performance from the Malaysian pair who won the Thailand Masters in January.
Reaching the final in the Australian Open is a good sign from Peng Soon-Liu Ying that they are on the right track for the Asian Games in Indonesia in August.
The men’s singles was an all-China affair between youngsters Lu Guangzu and Zhou Zeqi with the former coming 21-8, 23-21 winner for the title while the women’s title also went China’s way. Cai Yanyan needed only 35 minutes for her 21-14, 21-13 win over Japan’s Ayumi Mine in the final.
Indonesian pairs featured in the men’s doubles final with top seeds Berry Angriawan-Hardianto Hardianto prevailing 21-9, 9-21, 21-15 over compatriots and second seeds Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pangkaryanira for the title.
Japan won the women’s doubles title through second seeds Ayaka Sakuramoto-Yukiko Takahata. In the final the Japanese defeated Korean fourth seeds Baek Ha-na-Lee yu-rim 23-21, 21-18. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
