Vietnam made the semi-finals of the men’s football event at the Asian Games 2018 when they beat Syria 1-0 in extra-time quarter-finals that was played at the Patriot Chandrabhaga Stadium last night.
It took a while and with the score still tied at the end of regulation, extra-time had to come into play as both Vietnam and Syria then stepped up their game in search of the winning goal.
A long clearance from deep in the 110th minute was latched on Nguyen Cong Phuong but his attempt came off the cross bar.
But fortunately for Vietnam, Nguyen Van Taon was on hand to finish the rebound from close for them to pick up the win and a place in the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals on 29 August 2018, Vietnam will take on South Korea, who beat Uzbekistan 4-3.
In the other semi-finals, Japan will play the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
