On a day when the men’s singles hope Ng Tze Yong and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin fell by the wayside former champion, Goh Jin Wei kept her hopes alive in the women’s singles in the Li Ning BWF World Junior Championships in Markham, Canada on Friday.
Jin Wei, the champion in 2015 in Peru, smashed her way to the semi-finals with a 21-11, 21-5 win over Korea’s Lee So-yul in 24 minutes to set up a repeat clash of the Youth Olympics final in Buenos Aires against top seed Wang Zhiyi.
In the Youth Olympics, the Malaysian won the gold with a 16-21, 21-13, 21-19 win her Chinese rival.
However, Wang Zhiyi made it all square when she beat Jin Wei (21-19, 21-14) in the women’s singles and help China defeat Malaysia 3-1 in the Mixed Team quarter-finals en route to winning the Suhandinata Cup for the 13th time.
Wang Zhiyi defeated compatriot Zhou Meng, the fifth seed, in straight games 21-18, 21-10. The other semi-final will between China’s fourth seed Wei Yaxin who stopped Korea’s Park Ga-eun 21-23. 21-15, 21-18 and Denmark’s Line Christophersen who broke the hearts of Malaysia’s Eoon Qi Xuan 23-21, 23-21 in a tight match 42-minute encounter.
Malaysia also kept their hopes alive in the women’s doubles with number three seeds Pearly Tan Koong Le-Toh Ee Wei coming through an easy 21-12, 21-10 win over Japan’s Shiena Fukumoto-Natsu Saito in the quarter-finals.
The Malaysian hope faces second seeds Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma-Ribka Sugiarto for a place in the final. The Indonesians were taken the distance before prevailing 14-21, 21-9, 21-5 against China’s Chen Yingying-Zhang Shuxian.
It was all over for Aidil and Tze Yong in the quarter-finals. Asian champion Lakshye Sen of India, the fourth seed, outplayed the Malaysian 21-8, 21-18 while Tze Yong went out 19-21, 8-21 against Japan’s Kodai Naroka.
Both the mixed doubles pair – Choong Hon Jian-Pearly Tan and Chia Wei Jie-Toh Ee Wei – were shown the exit, both bowing out in straight games.
Hon Jian-Pearly lost 10-21, 17-21 to Indonesia’s second seeds Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto- Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti in 29 minutes while Wei Jie-Ee Wei went out in 12-21, 17-21. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
