Sarawak-born Bonnie Bunyau Gustin did Malaysia proud by winning the gold medal in the men’s up to 65kg at the 2019 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old went from strength to strength – starting with 185kg in his first attempt followed by lifts of 197kg and 207kg to land the gold medal although his rivals included three-time Paralympics gold medallist Liu Lei of China.

The Chinese ace could only manage 190kg and finished fourth.

Hocine Bettir of Algeria (194kg) settled for the silver medal while Amir Jafari of Iran took the bronze with 193 kg.

It was Bonnie’s second gold medal in Kazakhstan. On Saturday the Malaysian won the gold medal in the men’s below 65kg. In the process of his golden lifts in the world meet Bonnie became the first athlete to win both the junior and senior titles.

“Hard work and discipline is the reward for my achievements in Kazakhstan. I am delighted with my success and my disciplined training also played a part,” said Bonnie. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
