Top seed Muhammad Faiq Haziq Masawi and Lok Hong Quan had an easy start when it took them just 23 minutes to advance to the second round of the Men’s Doubles of the PETRONAS Malaysia International Series 2024 at the Educity Indoor Stadium in Johor.
The winner of the Malaysian Junior International and also the SUKMA gold medallist, the Selangor duo faced little opposition from Kaisar Bobby Alexander (Indonesia)-Vincent Lawrencio (Australia) to win 21-14, 21-13.
Muhammad Faiq-Hong Quan’s opponent in the second round tomorrow would be against the Malaysia pair of Tor Bolherry and Jing Xuan Fan.
Tor-Xuan Fan, who had to go through the qualifyind round earlier, were against tested in three sets before chalking an 18-21, 21-16, 21-12 victory over countrymen Dibble Arnold-Chong Zi Hin.
In the meantime, Muhammad Faiq also made the cut to the third round of the Men’s Singles after his Australia opponent Teoh Kai Chen had to retire in the second set of their second round clash.
Muhammad Faiq had taken the first set 21-14 over his fourth seeded rival and was leading 14-7 before the latter decided to retire due to injuries.
The unheralded Muhammad Faiq’s opponent in the next round is Chua Kim Sheng.
The ninth seeded Malaysian booked his place in the third round of the Men’s Singles after easily beating countryman Khairul Azlan Khashah 21-7, 21-10 in just 21 minutes.
Other notable result in the Men’s Singles today saw Malaysia’s Tan Kean Wei overcoming the odds to beat second seeded Rasindu Bendahewa from Sri Lanka for his place in the next round tomorrow.
The 18-year-old took 35 minutes to emerge 21-13, 21-17 on top.
