The first circuit of the Malaysia Major Basketball League (MBL) is set to heat up the courts this Friday at SJKC Chong Hwa 2 in Kluang, Johor, as men’s teams compete for the grand prize of RM200,000.
Defending champions NS Matrix Deers will face a strong challenge from the rising Penang Sunrise Youngsters in the opening match. Meanwhile, the host team, Johor Southern Tigers, will take on newcomers Putrajaya ParkCity Heat later that evening. Another new entrant, Sarawak Cola Warriors, will make their debut on Saturday.
This year’s tournament features five men’s teams and four women’s teams. The men’s champion will receive RM200,000, with RM100,000 going to the runner-up. In the women’s division, the champion will take home RM35,000, while the runner-up will earn RM15,000.
The men’s regular season will commence in Kluang (Nov 22-24), followed by Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan (Nov 29-Dec 1); George Town, Penang (Dec 6-8); Kuala Langat, Selangor (Dec 20-22); and finally, the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur (Dec 26-29). The top four teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the playoffs, scheduled for January at the MABA Stadium.
The women’s regular season will be held in Jenjarom (Dec 13-15) and Kuala Langat (Dec 20-22). The semi finals will take place on Dec 25, followed by the best-of-three finals from Dec 27-29, all hosted at the MABA Stadium. Teams competing include NS Matrix Deers, Johor Southern Tigers, Selangor EST Jersey, and MKYC Dragons.
MBL Commissioner Frank Ch’ng stated that each team is permitted to recruit up to three foreign players, with a maximum of two allowed on the court at any given time. This is intended to enhance the quality of play and raise the level of competition alongside local talent.
