A DAVID V GOLIATH SHOWPIECE IN CRICKET
THE long wait for cricket’s debut showpiece in the 29th edition of the SEA Games 2017 gets underway on Thursday (Aug 17) with the men’s 50 overs competition at the Kinrara Oval in Bandar Kinrara.
Myanmar and Thailand – two new kids on the block – open the Games cricket fixtures with the first match on Thursday (17 Aug) (8.0am) followed by the Singapore-Indonesia tie (4pm). The Malaysians go into action on Friday against Thailand (9am).
An additional new comer to the world of cricket in the biennial Games is Vietnam, who is already awed by the top class facilities at the Kinrara Oval.
Malaysian Cricket Association’s target of gold medals in the men’s 50 overs and T20 is a realistic figure owing to the country’s proud history of the game introduced by our colonial masters’ decades ago.
However, the same can be said of Singapore’s flourishing record and it is no secret that the contest for gold medals is going to be an affair between both traditional cricket-playing nations.
The women’s T20 event which starts on Aug 21 will see Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar vie for the gold medal whilst the men’s event kicks off on Aug 26.
