Despite still having a mathematical chance of making the cut, Brunei head coach Mike Wong has almost given up on making the final rounds of the AFF Suzuki Cup this year.

Cambodia, he says, are the firm favourites heading into the final round robin games of the qualifiers in two days.

And this after Brunei were shown up by the hosts yesterday with two quick goals in the first ten minutes of the game before Cambodia strolled for their second full points with the third goal of the game just before the break.

“The four teams are evenly matched although Cambodia have the slight advantage as they are playing at home in front of their home fans,” said Mike.

“And also they had been playing a lot of friendlies prior to this tournament so they are very well prepared. That is something which we cannot discount on, they did their homework.”

Cambodia currently lead the standings in the qualifiers with the full six points from two matches played thus far.

Laos are on second with the same three points from two games as with Brunei although the latter stood higher in the standings due to better goal difference.

Laos are on equal three goals scored as against conceding three while Brunei are on -2 after scoring twice and letting in four goals.

Timor Leste have no chance of making the next round after losing both their games.

But the Sultanate side still have the chance of making the next round if they can beat Laos with at least six goals and hoping that Timor do them a favour by beating the hosts.

A scenario which Mike refused to be drawn into.

“For us, we made the mistake with the set pieces. We did not defend well and as as a result we conceded two goals in the first ten minutes and then 3-0 down at the end of half time. What can I say to that?, quipped Mike.

“But I am very proud of the players nonetheless.”
