A total of 16 aspiring candidates from the Arab world are currently attending the Badminton Asia Regional Umpires Course for beginners in Beirut, Lebanon in conjunction with the Arab Championships and the West Asia Championships.
The 2018 Junior Championships are the for the Under-17 and Under-15 categories and has drawn an overwhelming response from the Arab nations.
Syria, Iraq, Algeria, and Tunisia have two candidates each while hosts Lebanon has the largest number with eight candidates. This is the first time such a course is being held in Lebanon.
Badminton Asia Chief Operating Officer Mr. Kenny Goh said there is no theory test for this course but described as an “important course launching pad for those who are aspiring to become badminton umpires” with the Asian badminton body.
The beginners’ course was held from Sept 1-3 and conducted by the experienced Mr. Sudhakar Verumi of India.
The West Asia Championships are divided into two sections.
# The Arab Championships from Sept 4-6; and
# West Asia Championships from Sept 7-9
All the candidates officiated at the two said championships for their practical test.
“This course is the first step towards joining the Badminton Asia Regional Umpires Training Course which will include the theory test,” said Kenny, adding that the aggressive approach by Badminton Asia is “bearing fruit” for the development of the game in the continent. – Badminton Asia
