Former international Safee Sali has snubbed his home state Selangor and moved north to play for Perlis – dubbed the Northern Lions – a team that plied its football trade in Malaysian Football League’s third tier league.
Â
The Kajang-born Safee, 34, is not the only big name to move to the tiny state which has lost its lustre due to financial problems.
Â
Also joining the Northern Tigers is former internationals Badhri Radzi, who is popularly known as Piya to his fans, Azmi Muslim, Amiridzwan Taj Tajuddin, Khyrl Muhaimin.
Â
Safee signed a one year deal with the Perlis Football Association in Bangi on Tuesday.Â
Â
“I had an offer from Selangor but after giving the matter a deep thought I decided on Perlis to continue my football career,” said Safee in an interview after the signing ceremony.
Â
When asked why sign for a team which has been plagued with financial woes , Safee said he was swayed by the new management’s “clear mission” and “vision” to bring back the football glory to Perlis.

PFA president Datuk Ahmad Amizal Shaifit Ahmad Rafie said steps are being taken to pay off the debts while Perlis football is “embarking on a new journey”  in the new season. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
