A total of 48 team comprising State, clubs and six countries will be competing in the inaugural Chief Minister’s Challenge Trophy 2019 triple lawn bowl competition from Aug 28 (Wednesday) to Sept 1 at the Perak Lawn Bowls Arena newly build Indoor Bowls Complex with 16 rinks (2 green).
Jointly organised by the Perak Lawn Bowls Association with State Government of Perak, Ipoh Municipal Council and Perak State Sports Council, the tournament will see 48 teams comprising of states, clubs and six countries competing.
The six countries competing are Hong Kong and India who are fielding two teams and China, Thailand, Korea and Singapore who was sending a team each.
This competition which was initiated by the Chief Minister of Perak, offers the highest champion prize money ever being offered in the sports of bowls – total of RM34,000, with the champion bagging home RM10,000.
“We allocated eight slots for foreign teams, but next year we will allocate more slots and hope to see more countries compete,” said
Tengku Datin Seri Noor Hazah Al Haj, the organising chairperson who is also the president of Perak Lawn Bowl Association.
“The local teams have the opportunity to play with the best players from overseas apart from winning RM10,000 prize money offered. Besides the top prize money and prizes in the Cup category, we also offer prize money in the plate and spoon categories,” added Tengku Noor.
Perak will be fielding eight teams – four senior teams and four youth teams preparing for Sukma – in the competition, where the teams will be divided into eight groups where the teams will play a round-robin league format in their respective groups.
The top three teams in each group will qualify for the next knockout Cup stage, while the fourth and fifth and team will play in the Plate knockout stage and the sixth placed team in each Group will play in the Spoon knockout category.
The overseas team started arriving today and will be billeted at the Lost World Hotel at the Perak best Water Theme Park – The Lost World of Tambun.
The opening ceremony for the tournament is scheduled for 8am at the Peral Lawn Bowls Arena on Thursday with the Chief Minister Ahmad Faisal Datuk Azumu expected to official declare the tournament open.
