The experience and exposure of playing in the inaugural Robot Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam stood out well for Lim Chi Chi Ming and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie in the National Badminton Championships which ended in Ulu Kinta in Perak on Saturday.
Chi Wing retained his men’s singles titles with a rather easy 21-19, 21-8 win over Misbun Ramdan Misbun in the final after a close battle in the first set. The final lasted only 31 minutes which made him RM20,000 richer.
The national back-up shuttler played two matches in the Asian meet = winning and losing one in the group matches. Chi Wing beat Firman Abdul Kholik 21-19, 21-15 in Malaysia’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Indonesia in a Group B match.
He lost 7-21, 14-21 to Shi Yuqi in Malaysia’s 3-0 defeat to China in the quarter-finals.
Soon Huat-Shevon Lai featured in the mixed doubles in all three matches and won two and lost one. The Malaysian No 2 mixed doubles pair beat Renu Chandrika Hettiarachchige-Dinuka Karunaratne in Malaysia’s 5-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka. In the match against Indonesia the Malaysians beat Edi Subaktiar-Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja 21-16, 21-16.
They however lost 14-21, 9-21 to Chen Qingchen-Zhang Nan in the defeat to China.
In the National championships surprised Rio Olympics silver medallist Chan Peng Soon and his partner Chow Mei Kuan in three sets to prevail 21-19, 16-21, 21-17. In the Olympics he partnered Goh Liu Ying.
The women’s singles saw a surpris winner in M. Thinaah who overcame Lim Yin Fun 23-21, 21-8 in the final while Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei beat Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean 20-22, 21-11, 21-8 for the title.
