Fresh from winning the US Open in New York last week, Datuk Lee Chong Wei is enjoying himself in the Yonex Canada Open in Calgary as he marched into the third round in the USD50,000 tournament in Calgary on Wednesday.
The former World No 1 took 33 minutes to defeat Chinese youngster Shi Yuqi 21-14, 21-15 to earn a third round match against Hong Kong’s fifth seed Vincent Wong Wing Ki. Wing Wi won 21-7, 21-15 against Sattawat Pongnairat of the United States.
Chong Wei was unseeded in the US Open but is seeded No 14 in Canada. On current form the Malaysian, who world rankings has plunged to a low 180 following his eight suspension for alleged doping, is playing in only his second Open tournament since the ban was lifted on May 1.
However, Chong Wei played for Malaysia in two international team events – the Sudirman Cup in Dongguan, China and the South East Asia Games, better known as SEA Games, after the ban was lifted.
Meanwhile, top seed Marc Zwiebler of Germany stayed alive in the tournament with a hard fought 21-19, 19-21, 21-17 in a 66 minute battle in his second round match.
Malaysian privateers Hoon Thien How-Lim Khim Wah, who suffered a shock first round exit in the first round in the US Open, got their campaign in the Canadian Open to winning start but were taken the full distance before prevailing 9-21, 21-13, 21-14 against Lin Chia Yu-Hsiao Lin Wu in 47 minutes.
