# Peng Soon-Liu Ying stun second seeds Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongpin in straight games
Lee Chong Wei is in the USD1,250.000 Blibli Indonesia Open semi-finals and set himself up for another cruncher against Japan’s Kento Momota – as he guns his seventh Indonesia Open title.
In the last match of the day, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying made it a double delight for Malaysia when Olympic silver medallists stunned Malaysia Open runners-up and second seeds Wang Yilyu-Huang Dongping of China in the mixed doubles in straight games 21-19, 21-14 in 38 minutes.
They will face Malaysia Open champions and No 4 seeds Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong for a place in Sunday’s final. The Chinese defeated Japan’s Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino 21-13, 16-21, 21-10.
The 35-year-old Malaysian, fresh from his 12th Malaysia Open title in Kuala Lumpur last week, has inched his way to No 4 in the latest world rankings while the 24-year-old Japanese is No 8.
In the Malaysian Open the Malaysian ace21-17, 23-21 for his second win over the Japanese who beat him in the semi-finals in Badminton Asia Championships in Wuhan, China in April. Chong leads 2-1 in the head-to-head count.
At the Istana Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Chong Wei clawed his way back from 13-16 down in the second game to beat 19-year-old Thai youngster Kantophon Wangcharoen 21-13, 22-20 in 43 minutes.
Momota, the former World No 2, ended Indonesia’s challenge in the men’s singles with a 21-11, 21-15 win over Tommy Sugiarto.
The cruncher against Momota is the much-awaited clash as Chong Wei, a six-time winner of the Indonesia Open has a huge fan base in Indonesia and is very popular with the Indonesian supporters. He last won the title in 2016. Chong Wei was also a winner in 2007, 2009, 2020, 2011 and 2013.
Chong Wei hopes to win back-to-back titles before heading to the World Championships in Nanjing, China, and the Asian Games in Indonesia in August. RIZAL ABDULLAH
