Malaysia’s young men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani continued with their winning momentum in the Victor Far East Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold in Sibu to reach the semi-finals.
The Malaysians defeated Hong Kong’s Mak Hee Chun-Tam Chun Hei 22-20, 21-16 in 38 minutes to earn a semi-final clash against Indonesia’s Hendra Aprida Gunawan-Markis Kido. The Indonesians beat Singapore’s Terry Hee Yong Kai-Loh Kean Hean 19-21, 21-13, 21-11.
There was more cheer in the Malaysian camp when second seeds Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing defeated fifth seeds Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong 21-19, 21-16 in a 38-minute encounter.
They will face a tough hurdle for a place in the final as they are up against Indonesia’s experienced Tontowi Ahmad-Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja who overcame Taiwan’s Lin Chia Yu-Wu Ti Jung 21-12, 17-21, 21-14 in 43 minutes.
Malaysia’s new pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie are also through to the last four in the mixed doubles when they came back from a set down to beat Singapore’s Terry Hee Yong Kai-Tan Wei Han, the eighth seeds 15-21, 21-15, 21-13 in 49 minutes.
For a place in Sunday’s final Soon Huat-Shevon will meet Hong Kong’s Tam Chun Hei-Ng Tsz Yau – 21-19, 21-17 winners against Taiwan’s Lee Yang-Hsu Ya Ching.
There is also hope for Malaysia to be on the winners rostrum in the women’s doubles with Lim Yin Loo-Yap Cheng Wen battling Hong Kong’s Poon Lok Yan-Tse Ying Suet in the semi-finals on Saturday.
In the quarter-finals the Malaysian pair gunned down Singaporeans Tan Wei Han-Crystal Wong Jia Ying 21-11, 21-11 in 32 minutes. The Hong Kong pair upset second seeds Chiang Kai Hsin-Hung Shih Han 22-20, 21-10.
Meanwhile in the women’s singles India’s Saina Nehwal eased into the last four with 21-15, 21-14 win over Indonesia’s Fitriani Fitriani, the No 8 seed. The top seeded Indian ace will face fifth seeded Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong in the semi-finals.
Pui Yin ended Malaysian Lee Ying Ying’s run with a 21-18, 21-16 win 38 minutes. With Ying Ying’s defeat Malaysia’s campaign in the women’s singles came to an end.
