There was no stopping Malaysia’s pool darlings – Pandelela Rinong-Cheong Jun Hoong – when they clinched the nation’s first ever gold in the women’s 10m platform synchro in the Commonwealth Games.
The duo led from start to finish to take the gold with 328.08 points at the Optus Aquatic Centre on Wednesday on a day when Malaysia’s newly formed second pair Leong Mun Yee-Nur Dhabitah Sabri won two bronze medals.
Mun Yee-Dhabitah won the bronze in the 3m synchro and made it a double when they also clinched the bronze in the 10m platform – making things count with their stunning last dive to wrest the bronze with 308.16 points.
Until then Mun Yee-Dhabitah were trailing in Australia’s Teju Williamson-Melissa Wu in fourth place. The Australians ended with 307.80 points much to the disappointment of the home fans.
The silver went to Canada’s Meaghan Benfeito-Caeli McCay who scored 312-12 points.
In the 3m synchro a poor dive by Dhabitah in the final dive proved costly for the Malaysians who were lying second in the standings after four dives. Their 264.90 points was only good for the bronze.
Australia’s Esther Qin-Gerogia Sheehan won the gold with 284.10 total while Alicia Blagg-Katherine Torrance (276.90) of England took the bronze. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
