Malaysia’s 5-a-side footballers are back on track in the chase for a medal by defeating Vietnam 3-0 at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (Sept 19).
The host, who lost to Thailand on Monday, scored through Ahmad Fikri Omar in the eighth minute while team captain Amirul Arif Mahadhir scored in the 21st and 29th minutes to seal victory.
All that coach Sunny Shalesh’s players need to do now is play to a draw against Laos on Wednesday (Sept 20) to qualify for the final against Thailand.
The Thais booked a berth in the final by defeating Laos 4-1 in their last preliminary round group match. Panyawut Kupan scored two goals while Prakrong Buayai and Kittikorn Baodee scored a piece.
QUOTES:
“Before the start of the match, the players had planned to score five goals against Vietnam which will put us in a better position should we are tied on points with other teams. Our defence was much better today and we are happy with the outcome.” – SUNNY SHALESH (Malaysian coach)
