Indonesia made up for the disappointment of losing the mixed team final by winning the men’s doubles final – their second gold medal in the individual events – when Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin defeated favorites and top seeds Di Zi Jian-Wang Chang of China 21-9,15-21,21-19.
Â
It was another painful defeat for China in this year’s Badminton Asia Junior Championships which they hosted for the first time.
Â
For Indonesia, who were the top seeds in the mixed team event, it was a glorious end to the championships in the individual events. For Carnando it was grand double after he and Indah Cahya Sari Jamil had won the mixed doubles.
Â
Zi Jian-Wang Chang, the reigning world junior champions, were expected to win the men’s doubles but nothing went right for the Chinese in the first game which they lost tamely at 9-15.
Â
Although they came back strong in the second game and forced a rubber with a 21-15 win the Indonesians were mentally strong and aggressive in the decider for a 21-19 win to land the title.
Â
Earlier, China won the women’s doubles title. It was an All-China affair with second seeds Li Yi Jing-Luo Xu Min snatching a 21-17, 21-17 win over compatriots Chen Ying Xue-Zhang Chi in 37 minutes. – Badminton Asia
