Bonnie Bunyau Gustin from Kuching, Sarawak is proving that having a disability should not affect one’s ability.
The 18-year-old continues to bring pride to the nation by breaking records after records – the last being his gold medal winning feat at the 8th Para Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai in March this year.
Competing in the Junior Category up to 65 kg, Bonnie surpassed his personal best and broke the games’ record held by Iranian Amir Sajjad Youssefi Zedah.
The second of three siblings, Bonnie started power-lifting at the tender age of 15-years-old with his father, Gustin Jenang as one of his coaches.
Gustin is also a para-powerlifter.
Bonnie will be representing the country at the 9th ASEAN Para Games which will be held from the 17th till 23rd of September 2017.
“Gold at the Para Games is my only target,” said Bonnie.
“And that has motivated me to train hard every day.”
At the pre-ASEAN Para Games 2017, Bonnie won gold in the men’s 65 kg category where, he also holds a new national record of 160kg.
“I would like to say thank you to everyone who has given me a tremendous amount of support up to now and I will continue to give my best to make everyone proud,” Bonnie pledged.
