THE Malaysian women’s hockey team opened their title defence in the SEA Games with an 11-0 win over Indonesia at the National Hockey Stadium on Tuesday.
Malaysia will play Singapore in their second match on Wednesday (Aug 23). In another match Thailand defeated Myanmar 4-0.
In men’s hockey, Singapore defeated Indonesia 6-4 while Myanmar edged Thailand 4-2. The host open their campaign on Wednesday against Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Malaysia continued its winning streak in the men’s indoor hockey competition with a 4-0 victory over Thailand at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre.
The national squad opened accounts in the sixth minute through Muhammad Amirol Aideed Mohd Arshad before adding three more goals in the second half to complete the victory.
The Malaysians had earlier thrashed Philippines 16-0 and Vietnam 15-0 respectively. They play Indonesia on Wednesday (Aug 23) before concluding their round robin fixtures against Singapore on Thursday.
The top two teams will advance to the final while the third and fourth placed teams will battle for the bronze medal on Saturday.
In women’s division, the Malaysians were held to a 1-1 draw against Indonesia with a 23rd minute goal by Nur Aisyah Yaacob.
They play Thailand tomorrow before completing their round robin matches against Singapore on Thursday.
