Cambodia received a boost this week ahead of their AFF Suzuki Cup campaign when they signed Japanese super star Keisuke Honda as their new coach.
Honda has allegedly signed a two-year contract with the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC) without pay as he is currently attached to play for Australian club side Melbourne Victory whom he had contracted to early this month.
However Honda will still keep a close watch on Cambodia’s preparation for ASEAN big event through video conferences and also going to Phnom Penh as often as he can.
“I will help Cambodians to play their real style of football,” said the 32-year-old former AC Milan midfielder.
“We are naturally very proud to have Honda with us to help shape Cambodian football,” added General Sao Sokha, the President of the FFC.
For the AFF Suzuki Cup, the Cambodians have been placed in Group A against Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar and Laos.
Group B are champs Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and the winner from the qualifying round.
