# Malaysia and Japan share spoils with a 1-1 draw
Two-time champions India set a new record in the Sultan of Johor Cup Under-21 Invitational tournament – handing the whipping boys a 22-0 beating at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru on Wednesday.
This is the highest score ever registered in the tournament since its inception in 2011 – rewriting the previous highest, a 19-0 win by Australia over the debutants at the same venue in their opening match on Sunday.
The huge win left the Americans dazed, still searching for their first goal and first point in the week-long tournament.
India are now on the top of the table in the round robin meet with the top two teams playing in the final this Sunday. The Indians have won the majestic RM100,000 trophy made of sterling silver and crafted in London. India were champions in 2013 and 2014 and runners-up in 2015.
With the huge win over the Americans, India have a 27-3 tally – ahead of second-placed
Great Britain whose tally is 16-2 after three matches. Great Britain pulled off a major upset with a come-from-behind 4-2 win over Australia.
USA head coach Brian Schledorn could only offer silent prayers on the sidelines as he watched his players at the mercy of the Indians who scored at their will.
“There was no fight at all from my players. If this is their attitude they have no business being on the field,” said a furious and disappointed Schledorn.
Australia head coach Brent Livermore was equally furious and upset with his team’s defeat to Great Britain.
“They (the players) did not follow the process. In one-on-one process we are mentally and physically stronger but we lacked the urgency,” said Livermore.
Britain led 1-0 through a field goal by Nicholas Park after 25 minutes. It was 1-1 in the next minute when Lachlan Busiko equalized for Australia. The Aussies were 2-1 up a minute later through Nathan Ephraums’ field goal.
Callum Mackenzie made it 2-2 for Australia but Britain were in the lead again with Edward Way making it count from a penalty corner just before the end of the third quarter.
Duncan Scott was on target on 58 minutes for Britain and a great win over the champions to further enhance their hopes of a top two finish.BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
