Thailand’s world No 18 and top seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan gave a dominant performance to beat Malaysian hope Goh Jin Wei 21-15, 21-13 to lift the women’s singles title in the USD120,000 Yonex Sunrise Indonesia Masters in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan on Sunday.

It was a disappointing performance from Jin Wei, the reigning world junior champion and playing in her first Grand Prix Gold tournament. Nevertheless it was an inspiring show from Jin Wei in Balikpapan.

The 16-year-old from Penang who dumped second seed Nitchaon Jindapol of Thailand in the semi-finals on Saturday was not able to repeat her performance against Busanan.

Jin Wei was not able to handle Busanan’s smashes and drop shots and also paid the price for poor judgement several times.

Sunday also turned out to be a bad day for the Malaysia in the mixed doubles when third seeds Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing lost to homesters Ronald Alexander-Melati Daeva Oktaviani in the final.

The second seeded Indonesians carved out a 21-16, 21-17 win in 39 minutes for their first title this year. Their last podium finish was at the Chinese Taipei Grand Prix last year.

The men’s singles final, which was an all-China affair saw Shi Yuqi crowned the champion after Huang Yuxiang retired in the second set with the score at 21-12, 11-0 in favour of the former.

Indonesia took the men’s doubles final with Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pankaryani-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo defeating China’s Han Chengkai-Zhao Haodong 21-16, 21-18 in 31 minutes for the title.
