On a day when national No 1 Goh Jin Wei failed to make the quarter-finals in the women’s singles in the Victor Far East Malaysia Masters in Sibu another youngster Lee Ying Ying kept Malaysia’s flag flying
Seventeen-year-old Jin Wei, the 2015 world junior champion lasted only 28 minutes in her second round match against Taiwan’s Lee Chia Hsin in her 12-21, 10-21 defeat at the Sibu Indoor Stadium – the very venue where she won the Malaysia Games gold medal.
It was evident the junior ace was affected by her left ankle injury which she sustained in her first round match against India’s Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli which she won 21-12, 23-21.
Her failure to make the quarter-finals left her in tears and Jin Wei is now worried that she may have to give the inaugural Mixed Team Badminton Asia Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam next month a miss to recover from her injury.
“I hope to recover from the injury to play in the mixed team event. The injury affected my movement on the court and I am disappointed,” said Jin Wei after the match.
Ying Ying is going great guns in Sibu as she pulled off an upset 21-18, 21-18 win over fourth seed Hsu Ya Ching. The manner in which she packed off her opponent came in only 20 minutes.
In the quarter-finals on Friday the Malaysian will face fifth seed Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong. Pui Yin defeated Indonesia’s Fenny Angguni in three sets – 13-21, 21-13, 21-17.
Malaysia are still in contention for the men’s and women’s doubles and the mixed doubles.
Tan Kia Meng-Lai Pei Jing, the number two seeds, by the Malaysia-Indonesia combination of Arif Latif-Rusydina Antarday 21-6, 21-12 while Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai advanced with a 21-7, 21-6 win over Indonesians Satrya-Ashiswna Fathkul Laili 21-7, 21-6.

In the women’s doubles fourth seeds Lim Yin Loo-Yap Cheng Wen ran out 21-12, 21-11 winners over teammates Amelia Alicia Anscelly-Teoh Mei Xing while Vivian Hoo-Chow Mei Kuan stopped Hong Kong’s Ng Tsz Yau-Yeung Nga Ting 21-9, 21-19 in 24 minutes.
