Kalimantan Utara Primabahagi Permai Sejati from Kalimantan outplayed Wilson Meerkats of Kuala Lumpur 3-0 in the final to win this year’s Sandakan Coastal Team title in Sandakan on Sunday.
With the title Kalimantan Utara also pocketed RM5,000 in prize money that came with it while the losers took home RM2,500 for their efforts.
Eight teams took part in the fifth edition of the series with Kalimantan Utara, Wilson Meerkats making the semi-finals together with KK Bugzzzs Her (Kota Kinabalu) and Sandakan SFK Turtles.
In the playoff for third and fourth place KK Bugzzzs Her defeated Sandakan Turtles 2-1 and went home RM1,250 richer. Sandakan Turtles settled for RM600.
The third place tie also saw two super tiebreaks in the mixed doubles where Johnson Koh partnered Nurshaneem Shamsuddin beat Irwan and Mary Chin 10-9 on sudden death.
In the men’s double Nick Boura-Azley Jumati coming through 10-8 also decided on a super tiebreak.
The other teams that took part in the fifth edition which began last Friday were KK Bugzzzs You (Kota Kinabalu), Sandakan SFK Rhinos, Tawau Tong Tong and Malkor (Kuala Lumpur).
A total of 80 players participated in this tournament. All the teams had either a state or national player in their lineup.
Each tie was decided over three doubles categories. The doubles had a total combined age of 101 & 91, while the last category – the mixed doubles – the combined age was 81.
Jacob Pang from Coastal Berhad gave away the prize money and trophy witnessed by Sandakan tennis president Fernando Rulloda, vice-president Mary Chin and Sabah Tennis Association president Johnson Koh.
