KASMA NARROWS THE GAP
CP130 rookie rider Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin has effectively narrowed the gap against senior team mate Ahmad Fazli Sham in the 2016 title hunt of the PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship. The slight drizzle in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, that began shortly prior to the start of the premiere class finals did nothing to detract from the race pace as Kasma beat Fazli to a photo finish victory with a time of 13’56.822s.
Despite taking pole position at the fourth leg of the season, a bad start placed Kasma at a disadvantage as Mohd Affendi Rosli charged into the holeshot. The quarter of the 20-lap CP130 final was dominated by PETRONAS riders Affendi, Kasma, Fazli and Abdul Muhaimin Roslan. However, Harian Metro YTEQ SCK Honda’s Hafiz Nor Azman rode an assertive race and succeeded in splitting up the group on Lap 5.
Spurred on by Hafiz’s advances, Kasma upped the ante when he began to challenge Fazli for the leadership position even while Hafiz was hot in pursuit. Unfortunately, the young Honda rider paid for his aggressiveness on Lap 16 when his pace drove him up the fencing at the front straight, lost control, and crashed at Turn 1.
Hafiz’s absence from the front group did nothing to ease the tension between team mates Fazli and Kasma. The lack of team orders from PETRONAS Yamaha Maju Motor was apparent as the two riders duked it out for the remaining four laps, ending the 20-lap race with a photo finish that was finally judged in favour of 16-year-old Kasma who pipped Fazli by a mere 0.012 seconds. Fazli had to be content in second place with 13’56.834s. Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi returned to the podium for the second time this season in third place with 13’58.310s.
“My race started on the back foot because my bad start was compounded by another mistake at Turn 1. However, because I was able to stay in the leading group, I was content to just follow during the opening laps of the race. When Hafiz started to make his presence felt, I thought that it would be safer if I could overtake Fazli. That was when I decided to make my move and leave it up to Fazli to deal with the incoming rivals,” said Kasma whose third win of the season had placed him three points shy of Fazli Sham at the top of the rankings.
After four rounds, Fazli’s consistency has kept him at the top of the standings with 78 points followed by Kasma in second overall with 75 points. Mohd Zaqhwan Zaidi is third with 45 points. The two riders’ domination of the CP130 class has allowed team PETRONAS Yamaha Maju Motor to pull ahead in the Team Award rankings by a 74-point margin in front of team Motul Zeneos Yamaha YY Pang.
In the CP115 category, Tengku Amirul Haffirudin also celebrated his third victory of the season. The intermediate class was halted right at the start of the race when a pileup involving six riders at the back of the grid brought out the red flags. When the riders re-assembled, the 14-lap race was shortened by two laps. Starting from pole position, Tengku Amirul of team Motul Zeneos Yamaha YY Pang easily got off to a strong start and dictated the race pace from start to finish with a time of 8’32.857s. Second place in the CP115 class was secured by PETRONAS Yamaha Maju Motor’s Md Haziq Md Fairues who clocked 8’34.043s followed by Md Aznil Md Ali of M. Seki Liberty Honda with 8’35.172s.
Tengku Amirul has built up a comfortable margin ahead of the championship’s annual mid-season break for the fasting month of Ramadhan. Three wins and one second place finish put the YY Pang rider at the top of the ladder with 95 points, 44 points ahead of Md Harith Farhan Baharin from team Idemitsu Kozi Yam Honda Racing.
Finally, Md Shafiq Ezzariq continued to run rampage in the age-capped Wira class. The Idemitsu Kozi Yam Honda Racing rider strung together his fourth consecutive win at Kota Bharu. The Honda rider completed a 14-lap solo race to win with a time of 9’59.874s. Trailing 0.233 seconds behind, IUGB AFB Tech’s Md Helmi Azman and Md Qhuwarismi Md Nasir of Weststar Motorsports finished second and third respectively.
Against the odds, Shafiq’s string of maximum points remained unbroken and he will carry the maximum 100 points to the next leg of the championship which will take place in Teluk Intan on July 30 and 31, 2016.
